The article examines the scientific and practical, as well as the social essence of the art of translation. In order to understand the peculiar features of the art of translation deeper, it is theoretically compared with other types of translation. And on this basis, an attempt is made to reveal the meaning of the artistic material, which is the basis of the art of translation. In social terms, the fact is substantiated that the art of translation is becoming a factor in the enrichment of the cultures of the peoples of the world.
